Heinrich Vogeler, Art Nouveau artist and do-goode
With the Barkenhoff in Worpswede, Heinrich Vogeler created a family home according to his own ideas. From the turn of the century until the outbreak of the First World War, the artist made a name for himself as a painter, draughtsman, illustrator, designer and architect of Art Nouveau.
In 1914, Vogeler volunteered for the front. When he returned from the war, the Art Nouveau artist had become an ardent pacifist who converted the Barkenhoff into a working commune. During this time, Vogeler’s wife Martha moved with their three daughters into the Haus im Schluh.
Vogeler’s commune in the Barkenhoff failed; he travelled to the Soviet Union to experience the political upheaval there. He died in Kazakhstan in 1942.
